5 Pretoria Markets you need to know about

Everyone loves a good food market. Especially when you know you are going to get great food, craft beer, vintage clothing and maybe a little live music. Over the past few years, Pretorians have really caught onto the market trend and we are lucky enough to see a good variety of events popping up.

Here is my pick of the best markets to visit in Pretoria.

Deep Roots Market

Date: Every first Friday of the month, 4pm to late

Location: 78 Storrar Drive, Groenkloof, Pretoria

Deep Roots Market started a little while ago and slowly but surely become one of my favourite markets to visit in Pretoria. You can expect a chilled atmosphere, jazz music and a great selection of food. My firm favourite meal is the crumbed mushrooms from ‘Fried Hake’ and desert from ‘Beignet Brothers’.

The crowd consists of a variety of people but mostly students and young families. One of the nicest things about Deep Roots Market is the fact that you can take your little pooch with you as well.

Hazelwood Food Market

Date: Saturdays, 8am to 2pm

Location: Greenlyn Village Centre, Menlo Park, Pretoria

I have been going to Hazelwood food market since it opened many years ago, in fact, our family restaurant used to have a stall there. What separates this market from the others is the fact that not only can you buy prepared food but also high-quality ingredients for you to take home to prepare your favourite meal.

My recommendation is to try the ‘Sushi Boat’ to settle that morning craving and wash it down with some of the freshly pressed juices.

Also if you keep your eye on their social media, from time to time they do an evening market.

Market at the Sheds

Date: Last Saturday of every month, 11am to 6pm

Location: 381 Helen Joseph Street

Market at the sheds may be located in town but it definitely worth the drive into the CBD. The market is very diverse in its offering with art, music, food and fashion on offer. They also host themed evening from time to time.

Cowhouse Market

Date: Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 4pm

Location: Corner of Silverlakes Road and Ridge Street, Hazeldean, Pretoria

I have only ever been to Cowhouse once and managed to get myself very lost on the way there. However, when I eventually found it I realised its a real gem. The market really takes you back to the farm with great fresh ingredients complimented with great craft beers. My favourite part of the day was the rubber duck race that they had towards the afternoon. They also enjoy evening markets from time to time.

Irene Village Market

Date: Every 1st and last Saturday of the month

Location: The Big Red Barn, 7 Nelson road, Olifantsfontein

Also a market with a variety of arts, crafts and local produce. The market is famous for its South African handmade arts and crafts and is situated on the beautiful grounds of the Sunlawns Estate that overlook vast grasslands and the Kaal river.
